This was my first Buster Keaton movie. He is so awesome.
Go West is a silent film from 1925, directed by and starring Buster Keaton as most of his movies were.
In the movie, Buster Keaton plays Friendless who doesn’t have much but decides to go west because of the advice of Horace Greeley whose statue we see at the beginning of the movie.
He gets a job as a ranch hand but it is plain to see he has no experience. One time he is supposed to milk a cow so he sets the bucket underneath it and sits down on the stool and waits for the milk to come out. When it doesn’t work, he places it underneath the head of the cow and switches things back and forth to no avail.
He soon befriends a cow named Brown Eyes who follows him everywhere and always looks to him for help. The movie is held together because of his love for this cow and his willingness to help the man who owns the ranch.
After the train carrying them breaks down, he leads a heard of cattle through the streets in one infamous scene so that they can be sold.
Another scene that I liked was how he kept missing dinner. He’d arrive late to sit down at the table and then everyone else would get up, having already finished eating. This happens again and finally he beats them to the table, getting up just as they sit down to eat.
The silent movies form of comedy is new to me, where the funny scenes just make me smile instead of busting out laughing. I like the subtly though and maybe it’s just something I have to get used to.
All in all it made me smile. I look forward to seeing more of his films. I rate it fours stars.
